Printer Toner Buying Guide: Cartridges, Drums and Cost per Page

Printer toner is the powder-based supply used by laser printers and multifunction devices. Choosing a replacement is more than matching a brand: you need the complete printer model, the exact cartridge part number, and the correct colour and yield. This guide shows how to narrow it down without buying the wrong toner cartridge.

Confirm that your printer needs toner

Laser printers use toner, while inkjet printers use liquid ink or refillable ink tanks. Check your printer's full model name and the message on its screen. A low-toner alert and a replace-drum alert can refer to different supplies. On models with a separate imaging drum or drum unit, a replace-drum alert refers to that part rather than the toner cartridge. Other models combine components, so follow your printer's parts information.

Find the full model and cartridge number

Look for the complete model number on the printer's front or rear label, inside the toner access door, in its settings or status page, or in the original documentation. The old cartridge or packaging can supply its part number. Match both details against the product listing's compatibility information. A similar-looking cartridge or a shortened part number is not enough, and region-specific versions can differ.

Choose the right colour and pack size

A monochrome printer normally needs black toner. A colour laser printer can require separate black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges. Check which colour is low and what the package contains: one cartridge, a multipack, or a toner-and-drum bundle. Do not assume every multipack includes every colour.

Standard, high and extra-high yield

Compatible models may offer more than one cartridge capacity. A high-yield toner often costs more up front but may print more pages before replacement. Compare the estimated page yield and price for each option. Page yields are standardized estimates; documents with heavy graphics or colour coverage can use more toner.

Estimate cost per page

Cost per page = Cartridge price ÷ Estimated page yield. For example, a $120 cartridge with a 3,000-page estimated yield works out to about 4¢ of toner per page. This does not include paper, drums, shipping, maintenance, or the effect of your actual page coverage. For a multipack, use its total price and the relevant combined yield rather than assuming every cartridge has the same yield.

Original versus compatible toner

Original toner is made by the printer manufacturer. Compatible toner is produced by another company for specified printer models. Compare model compatibility, capacity, return terms, and the needs of your printing workflow. A third-party cartridge should be identified as compatible, not described as though the printer brand manufactured it. Browse compatible toner cartridges and check each product's fit.
