Printer Supplies Buying Guide: Choose Ink, Toner, Paper and More

Running out of printer supplies can stop a workday. The fastest way to buy the right replacement is to identify your printer model, read the supply number, and check the product's compatibility list before ordering.

Start with the printer, not the cartridge

Find the full model number on the printer's label, control panel, or original paperwork. A shared brand name or similar-looking cartridge is not enough: supplies can differ across closely related models and regions. If you have the old package, note its complete part number too.

Which printer supplies do you need?

• Ink cartridges hold liquid ink for inkjet printers. Check the cartridge number, colour, and whether the printer requires individual tanks or a combined cartridge.
• Toner cartridges hold powder for laser printers. Match the full cartridge number and check standard versus high yield.
• Drum units are separate replaceable components on some laser printers. A replace-drum message does not necessarily mean you need toner.
• Paper should match the printer's supported size, weight, and intended use. Everyday documents, labels, and photo prints call for different media.
• Labels and maintenance supplies vary by device. Confirm dimensions and compatibility before buying.

Genuine or compatible?

Genuine supplies are made by the printer manufacturer. Compatible supplies are made by another company for specified printers. Compare the exact model list, seller's product details, return terms, and your print-quality needs rather than assuming every cartridge with a familiar number is interchangeable.

Compare real cost, not just box price

A high-yield cartridge can cost more up front but require fewer replacements. To estimate toner or ink cost per page, divide the cartridge price by its stated page yield. Published yields are estimates; graphics, coverage, settings, and document type can change actual results. For paper, compare the sheet count, size, and finish as well as price.

3. Match the complete supply number and colour.
